Best Aurora Viewing

There can be few places better located to watch the Aurora Borealis light show than the Aurora Borealis Indigenous Village. There is a good reason why the camp is named what it is, as the Aurora in this part of the world is absolutely spectacular.

Aurora Borealis Viewing

The Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region is one of the best places on earth to watch the Aurora Borealis. In a March 18th, 2024, article in Forbes Magazine, titled, Canadian Cities with the Best Chance to See the Northern Lights in 2024 the authors state that Fort McMurray is projected to be the third best city in all of Canada to see the Aurora in 2024. The study completed by AceOdds looked at the amount of light pollution in the region, the average hours of cloudless skies and the distance to the North Pole. It can be stated unequivocally that the Aurora Village is significantly better than even Fort McMurray as it is located north of the city and is in an area with absolutely no artificial light – ensuring the best possible viewing. Most Aurora viewing packages see guests stay in hotels in Fort McMurray where guests are driven out to a facility to watch for the lights. However, inevitably the guides need to drive the guests back to town at some point which means if the clouds break or the aurora arrive after that moment, the guests lose out on the viewing opportunity. At the village, your guides will wake you up at your discretion, whenever the Aurora arrive, ensuring that you see this incredible phenomena during your trip. At the Village you will watch the light spectacle while being cozy in the warm parkas supplied by the camp and covered in a toasty blanket while enjoying the hot beverage and baked treats of your choice. Instruction in how to best photograph the lights is provided by your guides and if you are unable to capture the lights at their best, pictures of the Aurora are also offered for sale.

Aurora Prime Time

Aurora Borealis are active 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. But we can usually only see them at the nighttime hours. The intensity of the light show depends upon the size of the solar storms from the sun. Generally, the stronger the storm the brighter lights. Aurora Borealis have been seen at the Village at all months of the year however, August 1 to March 30th usually provide the best months for viewing.
